Psychologists interested in dating and attraction have learned a great deal by reading and examining the personal advertisements and lonely hearts pages of local and national newspapers. Since we psychologists have benefited from the people who use these services it seems only right that some of the things weve found should be given back. In this series of articles I will outline some of the more practically useful findings that have come from this research and provide a summary of the results reported in academic psychology journals, written for those who probably have the greatest interest in this knowledge: the daters themselves.

Online Dating Statistics 2008

In 2003, online dating statistics showed that nearly 40 million Americans were using online dating services, with 20 million people logging on to at least on site every month. 48% of single men and 53% of single women were browsing profiles in search of “that special someone”. The average amount spent by a consumer was 239 dollars per year. Online dating statistics show that in the first half of 2003 alone, a whopping 214 million dollars was spent by consumers on the services provided by an array of various companies. The business was booming, and online dating research estimated that by 2008, online dating companies would see a growth of 642 million dollars, and 900 million dollars by 2011.

Online dating statistics showed that 31% of Americans knew someone that had used an online dating service. With 40% of Americas dating pool using these services, success rates were high. Surveys showed that 72% of women using these services found romance, while 52% of male online daters found their connection as well. The survey also showed that 33% of these people were able to convert the online dating experience into an actual date,with an average of 40% of those finding a serious, long term relationship or at least a close friendship. This lead to an estimated 120,000 marriages yearly that had stemmed from the use of online dating sites. Companies such as Eharmony claim to have an average of 90 users that wed each day.

Online Dating Scams

Every year many people become a victim of online dating scams. Unfortunately these people do not even realise they are victims to dating scams until it is too late. The intention of all dating scams is to obtain money from innocent members of dating websites, therefore the importance of being familiar with the types of scams used and recognising the signs of a scammer cannot be underestimated.

A scammer can work alone, or as part of a larger group of individuals who spend their time chatting to legitimate members of dating websites. They do this by creating a false profile, often similar to your perfect match and they befriend you and gain your trust and affection. Once you have let your guard down and you believe they are your ideal partner, it is at that point that you could fall victim to one of the many scams widely used. The four main scams used on dating websites are the travel scam, the prostitute scam, the phone scam and the postal scam. Each scam is fairly straightforward and all result in you departing with your money if you fall victim to one.

Deciding to find a partner on the Internet can be daunting task or sound a little frightening, but we can take the guesswork out of finding your potential mate.

Yeah, yeah. Its absolutely true that online dating worked out pretty well for me, ultimately. But having given it some thought, I wanted to come clean with you about something. Its not like every single date was a blissful stream of perfection.

Sure, I met lots of great women and had a blast for several years…culminating in meeting Emily on Match.com. But along the way, especially at the beginning, I certainly encountered my share of sometimes hilarious and sometimes downright nightmarish situations.

Dating and romance have gone through exciting and fascinating evolution through the decades. Whereas in the past, our predecessors were more conservative and reserved when it comes to dating and courting, people today particularly the youth have a more audacious and bolder approach to dating and romantic relationships. Online dating is the latest fad at present and sometimes we wonder; when did it start? How exactly did it rise to popularity?

During Colonial times, dating, especially marriage or finding a suitable mate, is greatly encouraged. Being single had been perceived as a sign of weakness and laziness. In fact, single people, particularly bachelors, were harassed, fined or driven out of town. For men during those times, the ability to choose a wife and support a family was very essential. Social standing and family approval were the usual criteria and not so much on romance. Love was not something that developed before marriage but after as a natural consequence of the commitment to a long-term relationship.
