During Colonial times, dating, especially marriage or finding a suitable mate, is greatly encouraged. Being single had been perceived as a sign of weakness and laziness. In fact, single people, particularly bachelors, were harassed, fined or driven out of town. For men during those times, the ability to choose a wife and support a family was very essential. Social standing and family approval were the usual criteria and not so much on romance. Love was not something that developed before marriage but after as a natural consequence of the commitment to a long-term relationship.
